EXTRAVEHICULAR VISOR ASSEMBLY

The Extravehicular Visor Assembly (EVVA) is a heat and light attenuating device (via the visors and eyeshades), which attached to and covers the EMU helmet. It provides micrometeoroid protection, protects the helmet from accidental impact damage, and protects against excessive solar radiation, (see ASCC Sun Visor for additional information).

ASCC SUN VISOR

The Sun Visor is seen in the ”as used” position, installed in the Extra Vehicular Visor Assembly (EVVA). The Advanced Solar Controlled Coating (ASCC) applied to the Sun Visor was developed to meet NASA’s challenging optical requirements to protect astronauts from excessive solar radiation during Extravehicular Activities..

Air-Lock manufactures the Sun Visor from polysulfone using a state-of-the-art proprietary process. An abrasion resistance coating is applied to protect the polysulfone substrate. The ASCC Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating was developed in conjunction with our thin film coating experts in order to deliver this advanced, high performance, robust visor, which is currently serving the astronaut corps well.
